April is the month when the gardening season takes of in Sweden. Spring is here and nature wakes up from its winter sleep. It feels like life begins and new energy is soaked up from a brighter sun. The scent of hope and a fresh start…
How a garden season looks like and what boundaries, regarding plant choice, you should be aware of vary from different areas – globally, regionally and locally. Climate and hardiness zones may give you a clue. So which conditions does a Swedish gardener have to work with? Well that depends one where you live. Sweden has developed national hardiness zones for woody plants, like shrubs and trees. To give you a grip of which conditions I am gardening in you may want to look at the “Global” hardiness zones and Earth´s climate zones. According to those Stockholm belongs to the warm temperate climate zone and the hardiness zone is 7 (USDA¹) or 2 (AHS²). Now you can compare it with the zone in your region which might be interesting. Why I am I telling you this?
I am creating a bouquet for you with plants from A to Z. It is the theme I have chosen. I will show you annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. All hardy where I am gardening – in the Stockholm-area. I will use the latin names which are international to all gardeners and biologists. This so everyone may be able to know which plant I am talking about and make their own research. Do not worry I will give you the common names in english and in swedish. There is more – every plant have their own little surprise in form of a recipe, craft or some little extra. So even if you are not interested in gardening there will be something for you. And of course you do not want to miss all the lovely pictures.
I had a fun time writing the posts – making research and gathering pictures. I learned a lot meanwhile and I hope I will manage to share that knowledge with you. My wish is that you will find this month both exciting and enjoyable. The first of April the A post is published and a new post (in alphabetical order) will be available every day. On Sundays we take a break. Please visit the homepage of the A to Z challenge to see what the other participants share and to get more information.

Thank you! I took a peek on your theme – it is briliant! I love epics. As a kid I was very amused and fascinated by the stories of heroes and heroines. And that I still am. I look forward to read your epics!

Thanks for dropping by The Rock and pointing in the direction of your nook. I’m absolutely in love with your theme. I live in a part of Australia where the flora is not so inspiring, but I am a flower-a-holic so look forward to your posts. (I’m probably the opposite of you, Charlotte, which can always be a strong basis for friendship!)

Thank you Lois! I hope you find something you like among the plants. Some will work in zone 5 or maybe some spot in your garden with the right microclimate. Are you participating in the challenge too?
